What is an FMS and where can I get one?

FMS2Today’s post is a little more…technical. We get asked a lot, “What makes Aleda Fitness so different?” Well, utilizing the Functional Movement Screen is one of the things that sets us apart. We use this handy screen to look at how your body moves at this very moment. We are looking for balance and appropriate stability and mobility. See the trick is, when our body moves optimally  we can perform optimally. Basically, get stronger!

FMS3So what is this screen and how do we integrate it? Great question! Here is an awesome breakdown for you –

Cutting Edge Training Philosophies

Movement training is groundbreaking, and something that most trainers are unfamiliar with, but is the foundation of training.  You have to learn to crawl before you learn to walk, and most trainers are having you run and jump without the ability to crawl.  It is imperative to build a solid functional base for your body to perform at your best.  You can’t build a mansion on a shack foundation.

Increase Efficiency to Increase Results

Your body is much less efficient with dysfunctional movement patterns and asymmetries in comparison to moving well. By using the screen, we can find your weakest link and improve it, this will help accelerate your results and break through plateaus because of increased efficiency.

If You’re Not Assessing You’re Guessing

Without a screen, how do you know what exercises are right and wrong for your particular body.  The truth is, if you’re not assessing you’re guessing. With a screen, we can narrow our plan of attack down to exactly what your body needs to achieve the best results in the shortest amount of time.

Know That Your Program is Working For You

Scoring criteria allows you and your trainers to see if your movement patterns are improving, or if the training program is having a positive or negative effect on your baseline movement.  This way you know what is happening with your training based on fact.  This a great tool to add to body composition measurements to see your results.

Decrease Risk of Injury

You can’t get results if you are hurt.  The screen allows us to see what your chance of injury may be, and allows us to program the best workout possible to make sure that you stay injury free.

The FMS takes about 15 minutes but will add so many great training days to your life. This is a complimentary screen and you don’t even need to be a member to experience it – because we are awesome like that! -ChristineFMS1

What exactly is functional movement? | Aleda Fitness | Portland's Personalized Fitness Studio - […] Functional Movements are movements based on real-world situational biomechanics. They usually involve multi-planar, multi-joint movements which place demand on the body’s core musculature and innervation (fancy, huh?). At Aleda Fitness we’ve integrated the Functional Movement Screen and systems into how we design programs (workouts).  Our beliefs and methodologies are based around the FMS and we use this as a baseline screening system to see if someone is able to safely enter our program to get the results they are looking for.  Integrating the FMS and its training philosophies into our large group format program design has been nothing short of amazing.  Our team really believes that this form of screening and standardizing movement is essential for safe, timely, effective results.
